Premier League 19/20 Preview – Outright Winner

We are now less than two weeks away from the start of the 2019/20 Premier League season and while that means the return of the weekly football bets, there is also no better time to place an outright bet on any number of Premier League betting markets. Over the next few days we at InterBet will preview several top betting markets ahead of the much-anticipated return of the Premier League.

Premier League Title Odds

Where else could we possibly start than at the business end of the Premier League? During the 2018/19 campaign we witnessed a thrilling fight for league supremacy between Liverpool and eventual champions, Manchester City. Now, as the new season approaches, the bookies’ odds suggest we could be in for an equally thrilling title race this time around.

Manchester City

Last Season – 1st

Odds – 1/2

Despite the disappointment of losing another Champions League semi-final, the 2018/19 season has to be seen as a resounding success for Manchester City. Pep Guardiola’s side sealed a domestic treble, winning the EFL Cup, FA Cup and a second successive Premier League title. The Premier League triumph represented the first time City had ever retained the title.

City’s prospects of winning a third consecutive league title could hinge on the fitness of some key players. Kevin de Bruyne missed large chunks of last season through injury but has looked back to his best in pre-season. In de Bruyne’s absence, Bernardo Silva has been transformed from a bit-part player to one of the first names on the team sheet. Namesake, David Silva, has announced that the coming season will be his last at the Etihad.

Club captain, Vincent Kompany, has departed for Anderlecht whilst the £63m capture of defensive midfielder, Rodri, also suggests that Guardiola is planning for life after Fernandinho.

Liverpool

Last Season – 2nd

Odds – 13/5

Liverpool had the unwanted distinction of achieving the highest points total in Premier League history without winning the title. Incredibly, Jurgen Klopp’s side amassed a whopping 97 points and lost just once but that was still not enough to claim a first league title since 1990.

Although a sixth Champions League title saw their season end on a high, winning a maiden Premier League title remains the ultimate ambition for Liverpool and their long-suffering fans.

The Reds have been quiet so far in the transfer market with just promising duo, Sepp van den Berg and Harvey Elliott arriving at Anfield so far this summer. That lack of transfer activity should be a concern for Liverpool fans and puts even more responsibility on attacking trio, Mo Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino. All three players were involved in major international tournaments this summer and will need to be eased back into the side. But if Klopp is to rest one of his dynamic trio during the season, are their replacements going to be good enough? Divock Origi and Rhian Brewster are the only forwards currently available to stand in.

Tottenham Hotspur

Last Season – 4th

Odds – 16/1

For many, this could finally become the year that Spurs challenge for major silverware. The Londoners are now settled into their new state-of-the-art home, the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, whilst they have smashed their club record transfer with the £55m capture of French international, Tanguy Ndomele from Lyon.

Several key players in the Spurs squad will also benefit from a full pre-season. There were nine Spurs players contesting last summer’s FIFA World Cup semi-finals, more than any other club. Consequently, many of Spurs’ stars endured either injury-hit campaigns or an alarming loss of form during the 2018/19 campaign.

With a massive 27 points to make up on last season’s title winners, the 2019/20 could be one season too soon for Spurs. Another top-four finish whilst claiming silverware in one of the domestic cup competitions will be classed as a successful season for Tottenham Hotspur.

Chelsea

Last Season – 3rd

Odds – 33/1

Third place in the Premier League, victory in the Europa League and an EFL Cup final should be seen as a successful season but the 2018/19 campaign was a difficult one at Chelsea. In the aftermath of a difficult season on and off the pitch, Chelsea now go into the new season under a transfer embargo and without their manager, club captain and star player. Maurizio Sarri has left for Juventus, Gary Cahill has been released and Eden Hazard has finally joined Real Madrid.

The transfer ban coupled with a string of departures has opened the door for many of Chelsea’s hugely successful academy to finally get a chance in the first team. Mason Mount, Tammy Abraham, Reece James and Dujon Sterling are all expected to play prominent roles during the coming season whilst the acquisition of Christian Pulisic should soften the blow of losing Hazard.

Replacing Sarri in the Chelsea hotseat is club legend, Frank Lampard. Lampard’s reign as Chelsea boss begins with a huge trip to Old Trafford on the opening weekend. Given Chelsea’s high standards and lack of patience with previous managers that one game could shape their entire season. If the Blues are comprehensively beaten by Manchester United then novice manager, Lampard, could come under immediate pressure from some quarters. Alternatively, if Chelsea can get a result away at Manchester United the momentum will start to build around this new-look Chelsea side.

Manchester United

Last Season – 6th

Odds – 40/1

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s rebuilding job at Manchester United continues and his summer transfer activity is a clear indication of what the Norweigian believes is required at Old Trafford. Ander Herrera (29) and Antonio Valencia (33) have already departed, replaced in the first two squad by 21-year old pair Daniel James and Aaron Wan-Bissaka. The Red Devils have been linked to a whole host of other possible signings including Harry Maguire, Sean Longstaff, Paulo Dybala, Sergej Milinkovic-Savic and Bruno Fernandes.

To fund these possible transfers there will also be numerous high-profile departures from Old Trafford. It seems more a case of when rather than if Romelu Lukaku leaves whilst he could be closely followed by Paul Pogba,

The Red Devils will be boosted by the news that David De Gea has signed a new contract but manager, Solskjaer has his work cut out in trying to improve United’s fortunes on the pitch.

Arsenal

Last Season – 5th

Odds – 66/1

Arsenal face yet another season without Champions League football after a season of near misses in 2018/19. In the first post-Wenger season, Arsenal finished fifth in the league and lost the Europa League final to Chelsea.

What the Arsenal squad lacks in defensive steel they more than make up for in attacking flair. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette will surely be there or thereabouts in the race for the Golden Boot again whilst Lille winger, Nicolas Pepe could join for a fee in excess of £70m.
